How Does it Work?

"The mission of the Catholic school is the integral formation of students, so that they may be true to their condition as Christ’s disciples and as such work effectively for the evangelization of culture and for the common good of society.” ~ St. John Paul II

Personalized learning refers to instruction in which the pace of learning and the instructional approach are optimized for the needs of each learner. Learning objectives, instructional approaches, and instructional content (and its sequencing) all may vary based on learner needs. In addition, learning activities are meaningful and relevant to learners, driven by their interests, and often self-initiated.

Technology plays a key role in personalized learning. Students regularly take part in online/computer instruction at home and/or in the classroom, which helps them learn at their own pace.

Finally, with the implementation of the MAP Growth Assessment tool (a computer adaptive test that meets each student at his/her level of ability and provides an accurate measurement of student performance), our schools are in a strong position to move toward a total personalized learning model.

Teachers and administrators have immediate access to comprehensive reports that provide real-time data to identify individual strengths and weaknesses, and tailor instructional practices to meet each student’s needs.

We have partnered with Boston College’s Lynch Leadership Academy to offer our faculty professional development on incorporating personalized learning into their instruction.

Personalized learning is made up of three core elements:

  1. Differentiation
  2. Individualization (which involves competency or mastery-based learning)
  3. Student agency
